How we calculated these benchmarks

These figures are median monthly customer churn rates, compiled from public SaaS benchmark reports, billing-platform churn studies, and the aggregated patterns we see across the churn data and retention experiments on ChurnTools. Treat them as directional medians, not universal constants. Your real benchmark shifts with average contract value, billing frequency, and customer segment.

Monthly churn converts to annual through compounding, not multiplication. The formula is Annual = 1 minus (1 minus monthly) to the power of 12. That is why 4.7% monthly works out to about 43% per year rather than 56%.

  • Median monthly churn: the midpoint rate for a typical company in that category.
  • Range: the band most companies in the category fall within.
  • Low, Mid, High: rated against that category's own good and average thresholds, not a single global cutoff.
